In a baffling move, it appears that President Bush and other “get-tough” Republicans appear poised to propose indefinite amnesty for immigration law breakers and. Interestingly enough, the Associated Press calls this a ‘conservative plan’, conservative I guess in the sense that it does not grant immediate retroactive citizenship on anyone breaking the law.

Under the plan, undocumented workers could apply for three-year work visas, which the plan dubs “Z'’ visas. They would be renewable indefinitely but renewal would cost $3,500 each time.

The undocumented workers would have legal status with the visas, but to get a green card, making them legal permanent residents, they’d have to return to their home country, apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate to re-enter legally and pay a $10,000 fine.

Can someone please explain how blocking a path to citizenship, but allowing indefinite work visas to anyone and everyone will either change employer hiring practices or discourage people from flowing in and breaking the laws?

Well anyway, I guess we have some of our first candidates for the “Z” Visa - discovered crammed into a van during a routine traffic stop on I-85 near Buford, GA, 18 suspected illegal aliens arrested in Buford:

A Gwinnett County Police officer discovers 18 suspected illegal immigrants in a van during a routine traffic stop on I-85 in Buford.

The officer initially pulled the van over because it had a paper drive out tag covered in a plastic bag with heavily tinted windows.

Despite a language barrier, the officer was able to determine that including the driver, Cesar Guzman Garciahere, 19, there were 18 occupants inside the van–17 men and one woman.

Inside the van authorities found food wrappers, clothing, and numerous plastic containers filled with human waste. Cpl. Darren Moloney says that leads police to think they were trying to stop as little as possible.

All of the occupants were taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Agents say all 18 were illegal aliens from Mexico. Their exact destination and how they entered the country is unknown.

Not sure why it matters: please issue them a Z Visa, a drivers license, and food stamps immediately. Once you get here, we need you. Oh, and by the way, please dispose of the containers of human waste you’ve been sitting with once you get here.

Simply unbelieveable. As Fox News reports, illegal immigrants are almost certain not to be arrested even if they are discovered.

Guidelines issued by U.S. attorneys in Texas showed that most illegal immigrants crossing into the state had to be arrested at least six times before federal authorities would prosecute them, according to an internal Justice Department memo.

The disclosure provides a rare view of how federal authorities attempt to curb illegal immigration. The memo was released this week in response to a congressional investigation of the dismissals of eight U.S. attorneys.

The Border Patrol makes more than 1 million arrests a year on the U.S.-Mexico border. T.J. Bonner, head of a union representing Border Patrol agents, said it’s unrealistic to prosecute all violators.

Why do you think there are so many people crossing the border? Could it be that it’s because we keep looking the other way when it comes to violating the immigration law? And then because so many people flaunt our neglect, we then say the problem is too big to solve?

The fact that one million people are actually caught at the border to be a good sign. And if we started by being serious and sending them back - others will undoubtably get the message!
